The High Commission of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Sri Lanka celebrated the 53rd Armed Forces Day with a grand reception at Hotel Shangri-La last evening (25 November 2024). The event highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations and commemorated the pivotal contributions of Bangladesh’s Armed Forces.
Adding prestige to the occasion, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) WWV, RWP and two Bars, RSP and Bar, USP, MMSc (Strat Stu-China), MSc (Def Stu) in Mgt, MSc (Def & Strat Stu), fndu (China), psc, graced the evening as the Chief Guest.
Hosted under the auspices of His Excellency Mr. Andalib Elias, High Commissioner of Bangladesh, the celebration brought together a distinguished gathering of Sri Lanka’s defence and diplomatic community.
General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), honoured the event with his presence, accompanied by his spouse, Mrs. Sujeewa Nelson, upon the gracious invitation of the High Commissioner.
In their speeches, the Secretary of Defence and the High Commissioner emphasized the historic significance of Bangladesh’s Armed Forces Day, paying tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of its military in securing and safeguarding the nation’s independence.
During the evening, General Shavendra Silva extended his heartfelt congratulations to the High Commissioner and his dedicated staff, commending the splendid celebration. He also underscored the deep camaraderie and mutual respect between the Armed Forces of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, highlighting the robust collaboration and shared commitment to regional peace and security.
The event was a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations. It symbolised the goodwill and shared aspirations for continued collaboration in defence and beyond.
The vibrant atmosphere was further enhanced by notable dignitaries, including members of the diplomatic corps in Colombo, the Tri-Services Commanders, Bangladeshi officers currently in Sri Lanka, and numerous Sri Lankan alumni members of the Bangladesh National Defence College, among other distinguished guests. Their attendance underscored the profound and strengthening ties between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
