CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF LEADS SRI LANKAN DELEGATION FOR TRILATERAL MARITIME COOPERATION TALKS IN MALDIVES

General Jagath Jayasuriya, the Chief of Defence Staff accompanied by high ranking military, police and defence ministry officials was in Maldives for the 4th Deputy National Security Adviser (NSA) Level Meeting on Trilateral Maritime Cooperation. The meeting which was held on 23rd and 24th September is a precursor to the 4th NSA Level Meeting scheduled to be held later this year. The delegations of Sri Lanka, Maldives and India discussed the progress on specific outcomes of the 3rd NSA level meeting held in New Delhi on 6 March 2014. In his opening remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff stated that the three countries have a significant role to play in ensuring the security of the Indian Ocean sea lanes. He emphasised that no country can effectively counter the threats in the Indian Ocean maritime region in isolation.\r\n\r\nThe Sri Lankan Delegation was headed by the Chief of Defence Staff and included Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, Rear Admiral RC Wijegunaratne, Air Vice Marshal GP Bulathsinghala, DIG Mr CN Wakishta and Ms Sashikala Premawardhane.
