General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), paid an official farewell visit to Air Force Headquarters on 30 December, ahead of his retirement from active military service on 1 January 2025. This visit marked a significant milestone in his illustrious military career, underscoring the strong cooperation cultivated among the armed forces during his tenure.
Upon his arrival, the CDS was graciously welcomed by the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa RSP and two Bars, VSV, USP, MSc (MOA) USA, MSc (Def Stu) in Mgt, MA in IS & S (UK), BSc (Def Stu), MIM (SL), AMIE (SL), rcds, psc followed by a ceremonial Guard of Honour, signifying the profound admiration and gratitude for his service.
In a cordial meeting with the Air Force Commander, the CDS commended the outstanding service rendered by the Sri Lanka Air Force under the current Commander’s leadership. He highlighted the Air Force’s pivotal role in safeguarding Sri Lanka’s airspace and contributing to the nation’s overall security and stability.
During the meeting, General Shavendra Silva expressed his profound gratitude to all Air Force Commanders who provided crucial air support to the 58 Division under his command during humanitarian operations. He also extended heartfelt appreciation to the courageous pilots, crew members, and all personnel of the Sri Lanka Air Force who made significant sacrifices in service to the nation.
General Shavendra Silva also expressed his appreciation to the current Commander of the Air Force for his unwavering support and dedication throughout his tenure as the CDS. He highlighted the Air Force's pivotal role in safeguarding the nation and ensuring Sri Lanka remains a safe and secure place for all its citizens. Additionally, the CDS conveyed his heartfelt wishes for the Sri Lanka Air Force to continue achieving greater heights of excellence and success in service to the nation.
As the Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York, at the time, General Shavendra Silva pioneered in persuading then UN Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon to approve the deployment of six helicopters for peacekeeping operations in the Central African Republic for the first time in the history. His effort was instrumental in securing this significant achievement for the Sri Lanka Air Force and the Armed Forces as a whole. To ensure its successful implementation, General Shavendra Silva personally visited the Central African Republic to oversee the proceedings before the establishment of the helicopter squadrons.
The farewell visit underscored the enduring bond between General Shavendra Silva and the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka, reflecting mutual respect and admiration built over decades of service.
