GENERAL SHAVENDRA SILVA BIDS ADIEU TO THE SRI LANKA ARMY

The Sri Lanka Army bid a heartfelt farewell to General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), as he made his official visit to Army Headquarters on 31 December 2024, marking the conclusion of his illustrious military career. This momentous occasion celebrated the culmination of a remarkable journey of one of the finest military leaders ever produced by the Sri Lanka Army.

Upon his arrival at Army Headquarters, General Shavendra Silva was warmly received by Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP psc IG, the newly appointed Commander of the Army, and was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour.

First, the CDS extended his heartfelt congratulations to Lieutenant General Rodrigo on his prestigious promotion to the esteemed rank of three-star General, after which the two leaders engaged in a cordial discussion.

Then the General Shavendra Silva took the opportunity to address the troops gathered at the Army Headquarters to bid farewell to him and he expressed his deep gratitude to all the senior officers who had guided his military career from the outset, with a special acknowledgment of the late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, whose mentorship had left an indelible mark on his journey at the early stages of his military career.

General Shavendra Silva's tenure was marked by groundbreaking achievements and exceptional service. As the 23rd Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and the 14th CDS, he holds the distinction of being the first officer from the Gajaba Regiment to ascend to these prestigious positions. Furthermore, he is recognized as the longest-serving officer in the history of Sri Lanka's tri-services and the most decorated officer in the annals of the Armed Forces.

His leadership extended beyond the battlefield, as he played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s successful COVID-19 pandemic prevention efforts. Under his guidance, the Armed Forces contributed immensely to the nation’s health and safety during a critical time.

General Shavendra Silva also made significant contributions to the professional development of the Army, focusing on the career progression of officers and soldiers, as well as the enhancement of infrastructure. His vision and dedication have left a lasting legacy, shaping the Army into a modern, efficient, and resilient force.

As he stepped out of Army Headquarters in uniform for the final time, General Shavendra Silva reflected on his journey with deep emotion, dedicating all his achievements to the brave men and women of the Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

General Shavendra Silva's departure marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of military personnel. The Sri Lanka Army, and indeed the nation, will forever remember and honour his extraordinary service.
