Marking the conclusion of a remarkable and decorated military career, the incumbent Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, will retire from active service as the Chief of Defence Staff with effect from 1st January 2025.
General Shavendra Silva was appointed as the 8th Chief of Defence Staff of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka effective from 01 June 2022.
General Shavendra Silva has rendered over 40 years of unblemished, distinguished, and commendable service in the Sri Lanka Army. Before assuming the role of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), he served as the Acting Chief of Defence Staff and the 23rd Commander of the Sri Lanka Army. Notably, he holds the distinction of being promoted to the first four-star General while on active service to lead the Sri Lanka Army, earning widespread acclaim for his exceptional leadership and strategic vision.
In honour of his retirement, a majestic Tri-Service Guard of Honour was accorded ceremonially at the premises of Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) symbolizing the deep respect and recognition for his service to the Tri-Services of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces.
The outgoing military leader, renowned as the longest-serving and most decorated officer in the Sri Lankan Armed Forces history, was escorted to a specially erected saluting dais by Tri-Service bagpipers, adding a touch of grandeur to the occasion. The majestic ceremony highlighted the esteem in which he is held by his colleagues and subordinates.
General Shavendra Silva’s illustrious career has been defined by dedication, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of military personnel as he embarks on a new chapter beyond active service.
