NEW BANGLADESH HIGH COMMISSIONER MEETS CDS

His Excellency Mr. Andalib Elias, the new High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, at his office this morning (07 October 2024) upon assuming his new role.

The High Commissioner, who was ceremonially escorted to the premises, was warmly received by Major General Nilantha Premaratne RSP USP psc, Chief of Staff at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS), and accompanied to the CDS’s office.

At the outset of the meeting, the CDS expressed his sincere gratefulness to the Ambassador for taking the time to visit and extended a warm welcome. On behalf of all ranks of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, the CDS congratulated the Ambassador on his new assignment in Sri Lanka. Reflecting on the longstanding and robust bilateral ties between the two nations, the CDS expressed his hope that the Ambassador’s tenure would serve to elevate Sri Lanka-Bangladesh relations to even greater heights.

Acknowledging the longstanding cordial ties between the defence forces of both countries, the CDS highlighted avenues for further strengthening defence cooperation in the areas that are important for both countries in the current defence dynamics.

In turn, the High Commissioner conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to the CDS for the opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue. He expressed sincere gratitude for the CDS’s unwavering commitment to fostering robust defence relations between the two friendly nations.

Moving beyond the defense sphere, the Ambassador highlighted opportunities for collaboration in the economic sector, particularly in areas such as apparel, Sri Lankan tea, and tourism, where both countries can benefit equally.

Concluding the meeting, the CDS extended his best wishes to the new diplomat for a successful tenure, encouraging him to explore Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, and renowned hospitality, and to promote a favourable perception of Sri Lanka among the people of Bangladesh.

In keeping with traditional military customs, the CDS presented a special memento to the visiting High Commissioner, wishing him success in his future endeavours. In return, the High Commissioner presented a memento to the CDS, symbolising the strong bilateral relations between their nations.

Before departing, the High Commissioner signed the Visitors' Book to commemorate the occasion, marking the beginning of what promises to be a fruitful tenure dedicated to strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
