OCDS CO-HOSTS REGIONAL SEMINAR ON 'INCREASING WOMEN IN UN PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS '

The Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS) in collaboration with the Canadian High Commission in Sri Lanka and the Association of War Affected Women (AWAW) successfully held a three day regional seminar in Colombo recently. Themed 'Increasing Women in UN Peacekeeping Operations ', the seminar was held from 08 to 10 March, 2018 at the Hilton Colombo. The seminar provided opportunity for both local and regional representations including sixteen participants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Nepal to exchange expertise, knowledge and perspectives. The inaugural ceremony was preceded by H.E Mr. Riaz Hamidullah, Bangladesh Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Ms. Jennifer Hart, Head of Political Division, at the Canadian High Commission in Sri Lanka. The event culminated on Saturday (10 March, 2018), with awarding of certificates to participants, facilitators and resource persons, who had actively engaged throughout the three day discussions and team sessions of the seminar. According to latest UN reports, out of 92,511 combined military and police peacekeepers to UN missions, women only constitute a figure of 4,254 which amounts to 5% of UN peacekeepers.
