In a poignant gesture of gratitude and respect, the staff of the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS) bid a heartfelt farewell to General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil on the eve of his retirement.
The occasion began with a farewell tea party, where General Shavendra Silva was warmly greeted by the staff and the CDS took the opportunity convey his deep gratitude to his staff for their unwavering dedication and support, acknowledging their contributions to the success of the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff during his tenure.
After which, the outgoing CDS unveiled his portrait, an enduring tribute to his legacy and exemplary leadership, which will continue to inspire many generations to come.
To commemorate the moment, the CDS posed for a group photograph with the staff and in a gesture filled with reflection and emotion, General Shavendra Silva penned his sentiments in the visitors' book, leaving behind words that encapsulate his profound dedication and enduring commitment to the armed forces and the nation he served with distinction.
Following cherished military traditions, the staff lined up along the street to offer their salutations, chanting the slogan "Jaya Sri," as they wished the outgoing CDS the best of luck in his retirement. It was a nostalgic moment, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for his illustrious service.

Adding a deeply symbolic touch to the twilight of the day, General Shavendra Silva chose not to retire without paying his final respects at the Armed Forces Memorial in Sri Jayawardenepura. In a poignant gesture, he went there and laid a floral tribute at the monument, honouring all fallen war heroes, including his mentor, the late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne marking the conclusion of his illustrious 41 years of distinguished military service.
