CDS APPRECIATES THE DISTINGUISHED CAREER OF MAJOR GENERAL WIPULA CHANDRASIRI

In a heartfelt moment marking the end of an illustrious military career spanning over three decades, Major General Wipula Chandrasiri RSP USP psc of the Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA), paid a farewell visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS).

Upon his arrival at the OCDS, Major General Wipula Chandrasiri was warmly welcomed and during a cordial discussion, General Shavendra Silva commended the tireless dedication and unwavering commitment of the retiring senior officer throughout his 34-year tenure. General Shavendra Silva fondly reminisced about Major General Wipula Chandrasiri's pivotal role during the nation's battle against terrorism, highlighting his bravery and sacrifices as a gunner officer. Furthermore, the CDS commended Major General Wipula Chandrasiri's instrumental leadership as the Director of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak, emphasising his pivotal role during the challenging times faced by the nation.

Amidst exchanged pleasantries, General Shavendra Silva extended his best wishes for Major General Wipula Chandrasiri's future endeavours. He also acknowledged the invaluable support rendered by the retiring officer's family throughout his distinguished career, recognizing their sacrifices alongside his own.

Expressing his gratitude, Major General Wipula Chandrasiri thanked General Shavendra Silva for his guidance and unwavering support, crediting him for the encouragement received during critical junctures of his service. He also conveyed his appreciation for the trust bestowed upon him during pivotal moments in the country's recent past.

Major General Wipula Chandrasiri embarked on his military journey as an Officer Cadet on 14 July 1989 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 19 January 1991, after completing his training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa. Throughout his distinguished career, he has held various appointments, steadily ascending the ranks until achieving the esteemed rank of Major General on 4 February 2023. The senior officer was the General Officer Commanding of the 24 Infantry Division at the time of his retirement.

In recognition of his bravery and gallantry on the battlefield, Major General Wipula Chandrasiri has been honoured with the 'Rana Sura Padakkama' and bestowed with the ‘Uttama Seva Padakkama’ for his exemplary and unblemished service to the nation.

In a heartfelt conclusion to their interaction, General Shavendra Silva presented Major General Wipula Chandrasiri with a special memento as a token of deep appreciation and commendation. Additionally, he graciously presented a memento to Major General Chandrasiri's son present at the meeting, symbolizing gratitude for their unwavering support and sacrifices.
