CDS JOINS SINHALA AND TAMIL NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS AT THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the auspices of the Foreign Minister Hon Ali Sabry PC orchestrated a vibrant Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration today (20) at the Police Field Force Headquarters grounds, Colombo.

General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who graciously accepted the invitation extended by the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms Aruni Wijewardane attended the ceremony where he was warmly welcomed upon arrival. The CDS also took the opportunity to extend his congratulations to the staff of the Ministry for the meticulous organization and successful execution of the ceremony.

At the outset, the Foreign Minister Hon Ali Sabry addressed the gathering and extended a warm welcome to the distinguished invitees and the staff members while wishing them a happy and prosperous Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The proceedings commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the traditional oil lamps, symbolizing the illumination of auspicious beginnings.

The day was orchestrated, paying homage to the cherished traditional Awurudu Kreeda (new year sports), while beautifully showcasing the rich heritage and cultural values of both Sinhala Tamil New Year celebrations. To enhance the festival's allure, Elle and cricket matches were arranged for the diplomats in attendance, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. While the events saw enthusiastic participation from all staff members, the 'Awurudu Kumariya' and 'Awurudu Kumaraya' competitions captivated the attention of everyone present.

Amongst the vibrant festivities, the attendance of diplomats from various nations added a touch of international camaraderie, joining to share in the joy of traditional Sri Lankan culture and the celebration of the dawn of Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
