CDS PAYS HIS LAST RESPECT TO THE FORMER NAVY COMMANDER (LATE) BASIL GOONESEKARA

As the Sri Lankan nation bids a solemn farewell to a distinguished naval officer, former Navy Commander (Late) Basil Goonesekara ndc psc, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil paid his last respect afternoon today (18 February 2024) at No 50/06, Anula Road, Colombo 06.

General Shavendra Silva, in attendance at the funeral, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members of the late Commander of the Navy. His presence served as a symbol of solidarity and gratitude for Late Admiral Basil Goonesekara's service to the nation. The CDS stated that the legacy of the late commander of the Navy will forever remain etched in the annals of Sri Lanka's naval history.

Late Admiral Basil Goonesekara's journey in the Royal Ceylon Navy commenced on the 23rd of July 1951, when he joined as a Sub Lieutenant. His unwavering commitment and exemplary leadership saw him rise through the ranks, eventually serving as the 7th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy from the 1st of June 1973 to the 31st of May 1979. His tenure marked a period of significant contributions to the naval forces, leaving an indelible mark on the institution he served with honour and distinction.

Evening today the final rites were conducted with full military honours at the General Cemetery, Borella, in accordance with naval traditions. The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and contributions made by Late Admiral Basil Goonesekara in service to his country. His legacy, marked by professionalism, integrity, and dedication, will continue to inspire future generations of naval officers.
