CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF ATTENDS 58TH DEFENCE DAY CELEBRATION OF PAKISTAN

The High Commission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Sri Lanka celebrated the 58th Defence Day of Pakistan in glee last evening (07th September) at the Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo. The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence General Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) WWV RWP RSP USP ndc psc MPhil graced this year’s celebrations as the chief guest.

In a significant diplomatic gesture, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil attended the Pakistan Defence Day celebration at the invitation of the High Commissioner of Pakistan His Excellency Major General (Retd) Umar Farooq Burki, HI(MI) and the Pakistan Defence Advisor Colonel Muhammad Farooq.

Pakistan High Commissioner and the Defence Advisor extended a warm welcome to the CDS at the arrival to the event signifying the growing diplomatic ties and mutual respect between the defence forces of two friendly nations.

The CDS, on behalf of the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka, congratulated the Pakistan High Commissioner and the Defence Advisor for their 58th Defence Day Celebrations. CDS also reciprocated the sentiments, acknowledging the historic and ongoing defence relations. Further, he emphasized the significance of dialogue and cooperation in addressing shared security challenges and regional stability. General Shavendra Silva also expressed his gratitude for the support and assistance extended by the governments of Pakistan to Sri Lanka throughout the war against the ruthless terrorists and at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

During the cordial dialogue, the Pakistan High Commissioner conveyed gratefulness for the presence and highlighted the importance of strengthening the bilateral military ties of both nations. Further, both shared insights on the need for collaboration in regional security to promote peace and stability in the South Asian region.

The Pakistan Defence Day marks the day when Pakistan commemorates the sacrifices of its armed forces and civilians during the 1965 war.

Diplomats, Tri-Service Commanders, senior Tri-Service officers, and several dignitaries attended the event reminding the enduring commitment of Pakistan's Armed Forces to safeguarding their nation's sovereignty.
