CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF JOINS ANNUAL ‘CISM DAY’ RUN 2024

The vibrant spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie enveloped the Parliament Grounds in Colombo today (18 February) as the annual 'CISM Day' Run for 2024 was ceremoniously commenced and marched up to the Defence Headquarters Complex, Akuregoda led by the impressive Army Band.

This event, rooted in the ethos of fostering sporting culture and uniting diverse communities within the military framework, commenced its journey back in 2006 as the CISM (International Military Sports Council) Run. Spearheaded by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, the event has become a cherished tradition, held each year on a rotational basis.

Adding to the significance of the event was the attendance of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, who attended the occasion as the Chief Guest at the invitation of the President of the Defence Services Sports Board and the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu.

The auspicious occasion also witnessed the esteemed presence of distinguished guests, including the Commanders of the Sri Lanka Navy, and Air Force, underlined the collective commitment to promoting athleticism and solidarity within the armed forces. Among the participants was a group of wheelchair-bound war heroes, symbolizing resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

The event drew participation from a multitude of Tri-Service personnel, reflecting the diverse fabric of Sri Lanka's military community.
