GENERAL SHAVENDRA SILVA INSPIRES THE EXCELLENCE AT COLOURS AWARDING CEREMONY OF MALIYADEVA BALIKA VIDYALAYA

The remarkable event that showcases the excellence of the future generation, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil graced the Annual Colours Awarding Ceremony of Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya in Kurunegala as the chiefguest on 19 December 2023 evening at the invitation extended by the Principal, Ms P N S D Abeywickama.

The CDS, known for his leadership and commitment to excellence, was warmly welcomed by the school's Principal upon his arrival. The grandeur of the occasion was heightened as General Shavendra Silva was escorted to the main auditorium in a richly orchestrated cadet band parade followed by the awarding of School Cadet Honours symbolizing the fusion of discipline and educational pursuits.

The most awaited highlight of the ceremony was General Shavendra Silva personally presenting colours and certificates to students who had demonstrated exceptional prowess in cocurricular activities. Congratulating the colour recipients, CDS commenced his speech by thanking the principal for the invitation extended.

During the speech, General Shavendra Silva recalled the memories of his schooling days and brought out a few examples to the audience. The CDS invited all the members of the school to perform well and work hard to sharpen their talents as everyone has a unique talent in them. CDS encouraged the students to develop skills through sports such as dedication, perseverance, leadership, and teamwork as they will serve as pillars of strength as they navigate the various paths of life. He stated that this is an event that celebrates dedication, hard work, and the spirit of never giving up. Further, the CDS also emphasized the paramount importance of sports and cadetting apart from academics.

The CDS did not forget to highlight a growing concern in the society that affects even the students which is drug abuse. He stated that this is a dangerous issue in the society that hinders the path to success of any individual. As there are ample means to hunt the young talented individuals, CDS urged the students to stay vigilant whilst keeping the teachers and parents informed of anyone who is struggling with substance abuse. General Shavendra Silva also invited the students of the School to ensure ‘Zero Tolerance’ to the drugs in Kurunegala which will spark the same across the island. General Shavendra Silva concluded the speech appreciating the hard work and commitment of the staff of the school and parents of these girls acknowledging that they are the real strength these children are blessed with.

The day’s event was concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by one of the talented daughters of the school in which she extended a very special thanks to the CDS for his humble acceptance of the invitation and gracious presence at this milestone event of the school. She also stated that the speech of the CDS inspired the children to perform better in both the academics and cocurricular aspects in times to come.

The ceremony was also attended by the respective educational authorities, academic and nonacademic staff of the school, members of the Old Girls’ Association, parents, and many distinguished invitees.
