GENERAL SHAVENDRA SILVA JOINS THE COMMEMORATION OF THE GREAT WAR HERO GENERAL DENZIL KOBBEKADUWA

Attaching eternity to the cherished memories of the military stalwart, late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa who made the supreme sacrifice to defend the country from the clutches of terrorists, the Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil along with his spouse Mrs Sujeewa Nelson attended the special service that took place on Thursday (03 August 2023) at the Theresa Church, Thimbirigasyaya.

To coincide with the 31st forthcoming commemoration day (8 August) of late Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa and his accompanying team, a special service and a series of events were organized by Mrs Lali Kobbekaduwa the beloved wife of the late General along with the family members.

General Shavendra Silva attending the event, recalled the bravery and leadership blended with the unending humanity of the late General. The family members, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, retired and serving Senior officers and Other Ranks, were among the attendees of the occasion.

The brief religious ceremony, attended by Catholic priests transferred merits to departed War Heroes including the late legendary, Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) who is held in high esteem by the general public as a true hero of contemporary times and recalled their memory as true patriots of the motherland.

Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, together with Major General Vijaya Wimalarathne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Lieutenant Colonel H.R Stephen, Lieutenant Colonel G.H. Ariyarathne, Lieutenant Colonel Y.N Palipana, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin de Alwis, Lieutenant Commander C.B. Wijepura and the soldier, Private W.J Wickremasinghe fell victim to an LTTE land mine at Araly Point, Kayts, Jaffna on 8th August 1992.
