IMPLEMENTATION OF NATIONAL PLAN ON DROWNING PREVENTION AND WATER SAFETY

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, chaired a meeting on Implementation of National Plan on Drowning Prevention and Water Safety today (19th October 2018) at OCDS to advice the stake holders on furtherance of the national initiative. Representatives from Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Disaster Management, Ministry of Health, Department of Census and Statistics, Sri Lanka Life Saving, the Sunday times newspaper, Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, Tri Services, Police, Sri Lanka Coast Guard and Civil Security Department participated in the meeting. This meeting was arranged subsequent to the appointment of Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne by His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena last week to implement a National Plan to reduce the number of deaths caused by drowning. As per the national plan, a National Operational Committee is to be established covering all nine provinces and twenty five (25) districts in the country with relevant human resource and infrastructure development in achieving the objectives set out in the National Plan initially to reduce the annual deaths caused due to drowning by 5%.\r\n\r\n
