OCDS CONDUCTS A WORKSHOP ON THE ROLE OF ARMED FORCES IN CIVIL UNREST

In line with the annual training programme of the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS), a workshop on the Role of Armed Forces in Civil Unrest successfully culminated on 13th September 2023 at the Auditorium of Regimental Centre, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Mutwal, Colombo 15.

Under the visionary direction and guidance of the Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the timely workshop was conducted for 60 senior officers of the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force and Police.

This training programme was organised by the OCDS with the foremost intention of enhancing the knowledge of the military and Police officers’ role in civil unrest. Over the course of the workshop that was unfolded as three sessions, distinguished lecturers Professor Wasantha Seneviratne and Professor Rose Wijeyasekara from the University of Colombo shared their expertise in the subject field with a comprehensive analysis of the various aspects surrounding the involvement of armed forces in civil unrest situations by examining historical events, legal frameworks, ethical considerations, and lessons learned.

Delivering the opening remarks of the day’s programme, the Chief of Staff of OCDS Major General Asanga Perera Hdmc psc highlighted the importance of the subject field and conveyed that the objective of the workshop is to equip the officers of the Tri-Services and Police to effectively discharge their duties in a civil unrest situation within the legal framework. He further encouraged the participants to broaden their knowledge by clarifying doubts from the expertise.
