OCDS WELCOMES THE SINHALA AND TAMIL NEW YEAR WITH A CHARMING CELEBRATION

Amidst the nationwide celebrations of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2024, the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS) elegantly orchestrated the New Year ceremony at the BMICH premises this morning (17 April 2024).

General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), graced the occasion as the chief guest, accorded a reception by Major General Asanga Perera Hdmc psc, the Chief of Staff of OCDS, alongside the Director General Naval & Air, Director General Coordinating, Director Administration and several Tri-Service senior officers.

Emphasising reverence for time-honoured customs, the customary proceedings commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the traditional oil lamp. In his address to the assembly, the CDS extended New Year wishes to all officers, Other Ranks, and civil members of the OCDS. Reflecting on the significance of observing traditional festivities, he expressed gratitude for the steadfast service rendered by Tri-Forces members during the festive season.

Recalling the nation's challenging past, General Shavendra Silva acknowledged the arduous journey towards the peace enjoyed today, punctuated by the sacrifices of numerous valiant heroes. He extended well wishes for the swift recovery of war heroes currently undergoing treatment and highlighted the solemn duty of serving members of the tri-forces to consistently honour the memory of fallen war heroes and safeguard those still carrying the scars of conflict.

The CDS additionally advocated for Tri-Forces and Police personnel to contemplate their career progression within their respective forces. He underscored the significance of career advancement within the framework of a professional military. General Shavendra Silva also articulated the necessity of foresight and astute planning in personal affairs, particularly in maintaining familial responsibilities without compromising professional duties.

He reiterated the paramount importance for all members to uphold the esteemed reputation of their respective institutions through unwavering professionalism and adherence to discipline. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of maintaining personal dignity and exemplifying integrity within the sphere of duty. Concluding his remarks, he conveyed heartfelt wishes for a joyous and prosperous Sinhala and Tamil New Year to all Tri-Services staff members, Police personnel, civilian staff, and their families.

Subsequently, the Chief of Defence Staff distributed valuable gift parcels containing essential provisions to OCDS civilian staff. The event culminated with a New Year Tea Table gathering, during which the CDS shared a lighthearted moment with the staff, fostering a warm and friendly atmosphere.
