TEAM USA EMERGES CHAMPIONS AT THE 11TH WORLD MILITARY GOLF TOURNAMENT - CHINA BAY

The 11th World Military Golf Championship - 2017, which commenced from 13th November over a period of four days concluded yesterday (17th November, 2017), at the Eagle 's Golf Link - China Bay. The United States men 's and women 's teams won honours emerging overall Champions at the 11th version of the World Military Golf Championship. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Admiral Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne graced the colourful closing ceremony as the Chief Guest. Sri Lanka is hosting the event for the first time and this also marks the island nation 's advent into the international golfing arena. The international competition was held with the participation of 10 countries: Bahrain, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sri Lanka, USA and Zimbabwe golfers. In addition, 27 officials from the International Military Sports Council were involved in officiating the championship. Nine golfers from Tri-Services represented Sri Lanka including 3 women, which was also a key highlight of the event. The tournament was played under three main categories (Individual Open; Senior; Team), with each game consisting of 18 holes per round. Following individuals won awards for their performances: Chief of Missions category trophy, Captain AnsarMehamood (Pakistan); Winner- Women 's Individual Sargent Malanie De Leon - USA; Winner- Men 's Individual AymericLaussut (France); Winner men 's individual ‘Senior ' – I.W.O NaserMubaak. In addition, players also received awards and medals: Nearest to the pin (Women, Marine Riguidel (France); Nearest to the pin (men), Lt. Col FabionChakanyakaChitungo (Zimbabwe); Longest Drive (women)- Major Linda Jeffrey (USA); Longest Drive (men)- NiclguliusBachem (Germany); Fair Play award- France and the Don Keus Challenge Cup- USA. The Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral SirimevanRanasinghe, Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Kapil Jayampathy , the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Air Vice Marshal DLS Dias, Director Air Operations of SLAF and Vice Chairman of the Joint Organizing Committee, Air Vice Marshal SK Pathirana, Secretary General of the International Military Sports Council Colonel DorahMambyKoita, members of the Air Force Board of Management and and senior officers from Tri-Services were also present at the event.
